Calidris bairdii
29 may Barrow, Alaska
One seen collected on mud-shore / [illegible] Wohlschlag - in comparison with a ♀ Pectoral.
28 May Two seen in drum area - between row 1
drums & road to gates. The two were on an open
path of hundreds - suddenly one ran at the other,
jumped at it, both & stood there for seven sec. -
pecking with its bill around the head
of the bird underneath. The wings / the bird
on top were at 75° of flattening, tail was
raised to about 45°. Suddenly, the lower
bird hooked off the upper, raised one wing
& tail & then turned & pecked on the back
of the other at the same place.
Repeated. They exchanged perches
4 or 5 x - each time, the birds' top appeared
to be pecking at the nest to beat the
lower bird. The lower bird also looked
downwards in tail & far it slightly. After
their exchanges, both birds took flight - keeping
parallel to each other, each giving the
full note - once periodically setting its wings
at 45° & gliding for seven seconds, then resuming
the fast flight. They moved W/NW
Soul-3°0' - then both to the same area. They
landed 200 yards apart, each on open tundra
begun feeding. Lobs - 2 indiv. were seen feeding
on each other in the same area - same route? - [illegible]
