M.F. Smith 1974 JOURNAL Hastings Reservation, Monterey Co., Calif. Feb. 15 Left Berkeley at 10:00 am, arrived at Hastings at 1:30 pm. Checked with John Davis about where I could trap; Madrone Canyon, around buildings, neighbors on road towards Carmel Valley, and Bells ranch past the cattle guard in the road. At 2:15 hiked up Madrone Canyon, carrying three boxes of traps in backpacks. Set along creek 41-60, 61-69, across on other side 70-80. Up hill farther from creek 21-30 + 31-35. Back near gate 36-40. Then drove out driveway and parked along road and in through fence to property John Davis had gotten permission for me to trap on. Set 121-140 along creek, 101-112 at top of slope along fence near road, 113-116 bottom of slope, 117-120 down to creek again at Hallisey's + Warner Ranch. Drove back to Hastings and set 81-95 around unsafe barn + lab buildings, 91-96 around bunkhouse and shed, 97-100 along drive down creek, 6-25 along fence + around barn, and Big Creek brush piles. 135 traps set out Friday afternoon. Checked traps 8:15-11:00 pm. 25 Peromyscus calif.
