Penny Pines, Tahoe Natl. Forest 1.5 mi S of Sacchu Field Stahi,
Nevada Co., Calif.
Spotted a male and female. 1st saw & thought
it was flicker though breast was too yellow.
It (?) flew to dead pine at ~ 2' off the ground no
sound. 5:00pm, sunny day. I came in after
& had some flew to same dead tree. Back &
Male is very black. Had red on chin and
white eyelins ad wing patches a little smaller
than a flicker. Large (1 1/2") strong feet.

Found this bird on top of 35-40' fir. It
tap slowly, methodically and quite quietly.
Sounded like picking at wood not pounding.
