15 miles WSW of Calipatria, Bracketed by Salton Sea, Imperial Co. Ealy -63ft.
4/Nov 15 miles WSW of Calipatria, This was a thick marsh
water 2"-12" deep
of Cattail + Salt Cedar on W side of road. The
E side had been dicided + burned. Chris said it
was to be replanted soon. The Sparrows were hunkin
to the salt cedar. They responded to playback (5 or 6
many individuals "chirped") of Sage Sparrows. The
darker laces wintering in the area did not respond
to playback vocally. I shot 3 saltairs and 1 darker
form, Carla shot 3 saltairs, -i 3 1/2-4 hours of hurry.
We stayed in a 500 yd^2 area. The Salton Sea tendered
us to the N and we only ventured 200-400yds to the S
and another 500yds E into marsh. Heard SOPA'S and
saw American Bittern and Black-crowned night heron.
We left the refuge ~ 2:00pm headed north out of Calipatria
on route 111 (past dairy farms ad Dole fruit factory). Hitched
up with Interstate 10 at Indio, we took I-10 to I-5
in L.A. Then north to Bakersfield, just before Bakersfield
we went W on (119) camped on BLM land 3 miles
outside of Tujman. Saw Kit fox, heard Porcupine owl
(Bernio dector, id) yipping. Skinned sparrows until 1
2:30 Am.
