10th, & 1989 Journal 135 15 miles WSW of Calipatria, Bracketed by Salton Sea, Imperial Co. Ealy -63ft. 4/Nov 15 miles WSW of Calipatria, This was a thick marsh water 2"-12" deep of Cattail + Salt Cedar on W side of road. The E side had been dicided + burned. Chris said it was to be replanted soon. The Sparrows were hunkin to the salt cedar. They responded to playback (5 or 6 many individuals "chirped") of Sage Sparrows. The darker laces wintering in the area did not respond to playback vocally. I shot 3 saltairs and 1 darker form, Carla shot 3 saltairs, -i 3 1/2-4 hours of hurry. We stayed in a 500 yd^2 area. The Salton Sea tendered us to the N and we only ventured 200-400yds to the S and another 500yds E into marsh. Heard SOPA'S and saw American Bittern and Black-crowned night heron. We left the refuge ~ 2:00pm headed north out of Calipatria on route 111 (past dairy farms ad Dole fruit factory). Hitched up with Interstate 10 at Indio, we took I-10 to I-5 in L.A. Then north to Bakersfield, just before Bakersfield we went W on (119) camped on BLM land 3 miles outside of Tujman. Saw Kit fox, heard Porcupine owl (Bernio dector, id) yipping. Skinned sparrows until 1 2:30 Am. 5 Nov 20miles NNE of Taft, Kern Co. Ealy 92 ft off of (119) Left the area 0800 hours arrived Berkeley 1pm.
