10th, 9 1989 133 journal Yuma, Yuma Co., Arizona 2 NOV vacation but the secretary Melody was expecting us. From Yuma the refuge is ~45 mi north. Take route 95 (16th st.) north out of Yuma toward the Yuma [illegible] grounds), exit on Marknez Lake Road/. Go west (left) for ~1/5 miles where road will fork just after a speed limit sign. About 50 yds go on th right will be a sign to the refuge and a MCAS go right down this dirt road ~4 miles, to where the road forks - signs point to right for refuge and straight to MCAS. Go right see refuge Hdgs at res'dences. Melody had left by the time we arrived - 3:30 but she said Bob + Eddy w th sleep (around the back road of Hdgs) would be able to help. The guys were working on a farm field to support the sparse population. Eddy offered to take Carla + t out in a boat the next morning. He also directed us to a cattail marsh on Caly side we could drive to that night. We took (95) south to Imperial Dam road (see Army installation with huge guns marky entrance). Go west down this road ~ 2 miles. Just over the dikes go right on Senator Wash Road, Then take Ferguson Rd to Ferguson Lake it is ~1 hour drive from th refuge. No song sparrows. Lots of cattails, with White-crowned + Lincoln's but no Song. They let us stay in refuge residences. They were very comfortable. Apartments 2 bedroom with mattresses, bathroom, stove and b.j Kitchen.
