Yuma, Yuma Co., Arizona
2 NOV vacation but the secretary Melody was
expecting us. From Yuma the refuge is ~45 mi
north. Take route 95 (16th st.) north out of Yuma
toward the Yuma [illegible] grounds), exit on Marknez
Lake Road/. Go west (left) for ~1/5 miles where
road will fork just after a speed limit sign. About
50 yds go on th right will be a sign to the refuge and
a MCAS go right down this dirt road ~4 miles, to
where the road forks - signs point to right for refuge
and straight to MCAS. Go right see refuge Hdgs at
res'dences. Melody had left by the time we arrived
- 3:30 but she said Bob + Eddy w th sleep
(around the back road of Hdgs) would be able to help.
The guys were working on a farm field to support
the sparse population. Eddy offered to take Carla + t
out in a boat the next morning. He also directed
us to a cattail marsh on Caly side we could
drive to that night. We took (95) south to
Imperial Dam road (see Army installation with huge
guns marky entrance). Go west down this road
~ 2 miles. Just over the dikes go right on
Senator Wash Road, Then take Ferguson Rd to
Ferguson Lake it is ~1 hour drive from th
refuge. No song sparrows. Lots of cattails, with
White-crowned + Lincoln's but no Song. They let us
stay in refuge residences. They were very comfortable.
