4th J 1989 Journal 77 Russell Tree Reservation 2mi NW Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif.-13081st. 10 April at 1606 hours came out to do observations on Foxes. One in the draw N of the electric fence across the road from the cattle pond. He was with his ? Last night I heard them call from th bg Bachan on S side of draw & also w/2d Hancock SE of those 30yds. Today when I climbed up the middle of the draw he called from the oak grove at & responded from the willow thicket just S of Oak grove on E side of draw. Positioned myself directly N of the willow thicket w/ the Bachans my are about 45yds apart. I scared up a Red Fox as I climbed the draw. It was lying in the tall grass on a foot path I had made last night. It was a long fox w/ black ear tips, fur was golden colored. She was white around the jowls - At first I thought it was someone's old house pet. But then I saw the bushy tail. It looked back at me while I watched it ascend th W side of the draw. It walked NE along the ridge top out 4 mts. In all it took 15 minutes to go 250yds. I saw Eastern Bluebird pair today, at a twigth. Saw just Red-winged Blackbird on the 8th. Oriolas have been back since 3 April when I saw 2D's callin purple near electric fence plot. Temperature was cooler today in 70s &d now 1832 is chilly for short sleeves ~65.
