1939 Journal 65 Santa Cruz Island, 25 mi W Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Co, California 23 Mar campsite with stone on a flat spot for a tent the bay was beautiful at then were 3 seabeasts harborred when we arrived at 11:20 am. From Pelican came a [illegible] or Ironwood Tree were found surrounding this bay. The Coryopsis was also in bloom. A seal was playing in the water. It looked like he saw us '2os' above him. We walked 5 from Pelicans in a grassland There were also Eucalyptus lining the cone. 4 Ravens were squawking in campsite on S side of Bay. There were a few Lupine in floors. We walked for ~3mi we were looking for the cave Middles Ray had explored yesterday. Because the gay was so much he could not see off the highest peak. The Middles are 300yds below the highest peak and to the W with Valley about 100yds to the W. But we made short time we took off at Pelicans and went Twin Harbors. We ate lunch on a peak a couple W of highest peak - I ate an egg, cheese, carrots and apple. Drank a great g water for whole day's travel. Because it was overcast it was not too hot. We headed further 5 until Ray got his camera and we walked along the Ridge W to the highest peak. The Astragales (legume, pea green with marigold like glowing flowers) were in bloom, Mariposa flower were blooming yellow. We came thru a Grove &
