w/4, 8 1989 56 Journal Santa Cruz Island 25mi W of Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Co., California. 21 Mar Of salami sandwich, carrots, fry bars and leaf tea we head W to Cochon Prieto. It was a 2 1/2 hour hike up over the crest of the island to a beautiful blue bay immediately W of the station. We climbed ~1300 ft to ridge in middle of the island then down ~1 1/2-2 mi to the bay at sea level. The red soil is stark the pale is shade the N part of island came from LA the S from San Diego. There was plenty of Bachains with Baricks Wm, Orange-crowned Warblers. Birds very secretive. The scrub jays are huge and brilliant there bills at 2X normal. Fly are very common. Red-naped Sapsucker in Eucalypts at station, Acorn Woodpeckers in the Live Oaks at Northen Flickers round out the picid representation. Saw an Amer. Kestrel also in Eucalypts, Mo dos too. The Bewicks Wren sound very much like Say Sparrow. Then is a small creek that winds its way around the trail toward Cochon. Willows, Pepper trees and Bachains line its edges, I believe orange-crowned warblers were in this area. Rufus-sided Towhees were in the oaks ad chaparral. Along the stream of dusk I thought I saw a red-tailed goose low than the vegetation. All the avi-fauna seem decidedly shy and hard to see.
