March 1989 Journal 52 Rundle Lakes, 2 mi NW Lafayette, Contra Costa Co., Calif (300 ft) 14 Mar saw G&F: OR/PWS: OK singing in live oak ~ 10' off gravel on N side of mulberry just to the S of the hemlock patch where I caught him. The bare patch on his head was visible from ~20 yds. 17 Mar Out to Rundle by 6:40 AM, sunny light cloud cover, no wind. Have nets set up at spot S of mulberry and in Hemlock in central valley. Both J's are calling, also heard chirping as I was setting out nets. Saw a G&F/Pass indiv feeding at bait on N side of mulberry or was with his Golden-crowned. Watched both indivs (R2/PWS) at brush pile. Also looking for nasty behavior. One indiv is worse so (fugred?) than the other but both are seen sitting on top of brush pile. Could it be that indivs that are molting tail feathers now were last year's birds? Lots of White-crowned >6 on wood pile with tw/reeds. G&F/W: WH OR was killed in mist net with its mate by a Cooper's Hawk! Agh I'm so mad I saw the hawk fly away as I came over the hill to check the net.
