29th, j 1988 Journal Crosser Creek 33 mi S of Saycnfield station, Nevada 6, CA 1 mi W Hobart hills 5840ft 29 June One of the eggs had crushed it blood drop formed at th crack. Found may 55 but discovered you have to get quite close to get th shot. Within 5'! I got one sparrow this morning out of 7 shots! It works well to leave tape player on i go and seek cover next to a prepared perch & wait for th right moment. Found an 55 nest in small bush ~3' high (not willow leaves too large [fat]) Nest was at base of bush no more than 3" off ground about 3 1/2" across warn with dead grass. B was disturbed by playbacks and would call in response. While I was hunting th B I flushed the female out & there were 2 very young chicks (< 10-2 days; no feathers except a wee bit of fluff on their heads) I collected th B but not th F. Nest was ~2' from row of willows that were 3' from th N edge of Prosser Creek, Sandy-rocky substrate nest pretty well hidden from above. Earlier today (before noon) heard B give an incomplete call probably signaling he is finished breeding for th reason. The birds were quite responsive to playback & afternoon possibly encouraged th- in early Am.
