14th, J 1938 Journal 3.5 mi New Hobart Mills 13 17 June Sanger Creekfield Station Sierra Co. Calif. 6328ft Arrived at sanger ~3:30 pm car was almost overheat as went over Donner Pass. The station is small and not so spectacular as Big Creek. It seems for more Urban because everything ad everyone are clustered around Joe's home. It is nice to have shower/ Bathtubs and Kitchen facilities, but really no decent place to camp. As Jeff predicted there was a Song Sparrow singing near the creek opposite from Joe's home. Asked Joe about Penny Pine area where Jeff camps. He said it is not allowed, I could get a ticket but he didn't care when I camped. 17 June Penny Pines 1.5 mi S (1st right south of station) Nevada Sq. California 6300ft. 5:00 pm This is an area that was burned (44,000 acres) in 1960. Some of the pines are over 30-40 feet but just as many are my height, sage and a dry leafy shrub (cabbage like plant) cover the earth. The soil is red and dusty - very dry. 1 mi from entry of Penny Pines I pulled over at least a snark of bread, milk and cheese. heard a Song Sparrow calling infrequently from the creek 100 yds to N. Warding video calling (sounds like "if you lather... wilt not squirt ya" he is ~10' up in a pine. Another is answering about 50yds to N. Withoutdoubt probably
