Smiley 1936 Aug 2 (cont) up over shoulder of mountain 700 feet high (dome-shaped). Artemesia major ground vegetation. Ground of silt with embedded rocks - of all sizes from few + small to large; Small rocks never covering more than 1/2 of ground's surface. Aug 3. Caught 21 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 Reithrodontomys megalotis, 1 Dipodomys microps levispes, 1 Neotoma lepida, 1 Perognathus porvus, 1 Eutamias minimus 2 Peromyscus truei truei. Moved camp to settlement of Fanning. Hall + I set gopher traps (11 sets) at a ranch in Buena Vista Valley (see Hall's notes). These on alfalfa fields - 3 small fields in all. Fields almost flat; no water for irrigation at this time of year; in two of fields alfalfa had been cut. Earth dark tan, relatively fertile. Aug 4 Caught nine Thomomys quadratus. These skinned out by Hall + I and recorded in Hall's notes. Moved camp via Oreana, Lovelock, Sparks, Reno to 3mi S Mt Rose 8500 ft.
