May 30, 1938.
Caught one Peromyscus leucopus (07461) in willow-brush also another there in live-trap, but it was turned loose. Broke camp for Nogales, Sonora to Berkeley, California.
Enroute ran out of gasoline twice but arrived in the afternoon to find that the American custom-house was closed for Memorial Day observance, and our passage could not be arranged until the next morning. Left the truck (lights burned out due to short circuit) at Mexican border-office and spent night on Mexican side in hotel.

Crossed border with no trouble from Mexican officials (ordinarily much the same red-tape that held us put in going into Mexico, but Señor Bonarand of the Pacific Brokerage Company "said the right thing to the right man") and were passed quickly enough by the US customs.
Drove to Tucson where truck was repaired; then drove on until after dark — slept near roadside.

Drove all day into night to La Crescenta, Calif- ornia where we spent night at the home of Dr. Benson's sister.
June 2, 1938.
Drove all day without event and arrived in Alameda at dusk; Dr. Benson left me there for Berkeley.
