JESimpson, 1938. 78. 925±ft, 1mi. sw. Hermosillo, Sonora. May 16, 1938, continued. made seven sets with ten gopher-traps along banks of irrigation ditches running thru orange-orchard where vegetables and wheat grow between some of the rows. Caught one young Thomomys bottae (07387; cheek-pouch contents saved). Set out 50 mousetraps along irrigation-ditch banks and in field of green wheat. May 17, 1938. In mousetraps caught only the tail of a house-mouse and a Chat (tore the bird to pieces trying to put it up). Señor Delgadillo did better with his 50 traps: a house-mouse and a pocket-mouse. The practice of flooding the field here probably accounts for the scarcity of mice. Caught another small Thomomys bottae wintropi, but did not save it. Caught two frogs in irrigation ditches of ranch (388, 389). There are many(kinds and individuals) birds here: turkey vultures, ravens, night-hawks, Gila woodpeckers, Grackles (five seen within a few feet to have yellow eyes), a black-and white kingfisher, chats, doves (very many Mourningdoves, some White-winged, Inca, and Mexican Ground doves), swallows, hummers, Vermillion flycatchers, English Sparrows, linnets. Broke camp and drove to Hermosillo for supplies and water; had lunch, wrote letters, and drove to 1150±ft. San José de Gracia, 20 mi. NE. Hermosillo, Sonora. (stubble) Made camp beside brook. Set out mousetraps in wheat-field border by mesquite and heavy brush.
