Bahia Kino, Sonora May 6, 1938.
Broke our "doorstep camp" at 4 am and
went down to the beach prepared to embark for
Tiburon Island; however, the fishemen decided the
water was too rough for a crossing and went back
to bed with the prophesy that the afternoon would
be quieter.
Señor Comou took us fishing on our "free morn-
ing" off I. Pelicano. I caught one 90+ and two 70+
lb. sea-bass! We saw many waterbirds -- 4000+
cormorants streaming across the water in
irregular formation to circle around and around
a feeding-spot (with many on water and the
rest wheeling), hundreds of Heerman gulls, dozens
of pelicans, a few petrels and duck-hawks, and
a frigate bird. The I. Pelicano is a barren rock-
hill with some sand-dunes at base; it is much
lightened in color from the multitudinous droppings
of the birds.
We came ashore early and found that the
fisherman who was to take us to Tiburon Island
decided that the fishing was too good to leave
(truly they did begin to run after we had come).
Some difficulty experienced in getting back our
first payment on passage as the fisherman stayed
out late; so it was necessary to stay in the village
for the night. We slept at Señor Comou's front-porch
as last night.
