JE Simpson, 1938 [Bahia Kino] Puerto kino, Sonora. May 4, 1938, continued. toward P. Kino; ravens and turkey-vultures were in flight; also yellow-headed black-birds. Here at Bahia Kino looked up Senor Renando Comou whom Dr. Benson met when here two years ago; at that time there were only 8-10 shacks now there are that many dozen. It is the largest of the fishing villages we've visited on the Gulf. Senor Comou is a St. Marys (California) alumnus and the local big-game hunter. He claims to have shot about forty mt. sheep and to have guided Winthrop, Brisbane, and others [illegible] on hunting parties. He told us of the former abundance of antelope and how it easily was to kill them by giving chase in an automobile — said the ant- elope could run 50 m.p.h. easily; he said he chased one nine miles averaging over 40 mph all the way. He confessed that they had been wiped out here due to this practice: now no antelope are to be found here. May 5, 1938. With aid of Senor Comou, who made arrange- ments for Dr. Benson's previous trip to Tiburon Island, a fishing boat was contracted to take us to the island. We selected our equipment, trucked it to the beach from which it was doried to the small sailing- skiff. As there was too much wind to make the crossing an early morning start was arranged; so we camped on Senor Comou's doorstep instead of driving outside of the village as we did last night.
