JESimpson,
1938.
63.
20+ft., Punta Grio, 5 mi. S. Puerto Libertad, Sonora.
April 28, 1938, continued.
an area of cardon where nests of sticks were
seen high on these large cacti (later saw 6x
ospreys in air there at one time as we drove
out)(also saw 2 birds in one large nest).
On the way to this point (yesterday, the 27th
of April, 1938) saw a coyote ahead of the
car in area where fisherman discard the
heads and entrails of the market-fish; we
chased it in truck as it paralleled road, and
I took a shot at it as it crossed the road
but missed. Presumably this coyote came to
feed on the fish heads as these beasts are
known to do at fishing ports. We have seen
their tracks often in the dunes (and occasionally,
hit fox also; as I did this morning). [illegible]
Feeding of the heads were 30+ turkey-vultues
and 15+ ravens.
Broke camp; drove toward Hermosillo, skirted
Puerto Libertad; drove 18 mi. to Puerto Del Piev (3mi.
farthier seeing first Dipodomys spectabilis mound); and
12 mi. farther to El Datil where we had dinner with
fish a la Seri (cooked whole in ground under coals as Seri
Indians and others made famous); the fish was excellent.
Drove on 10 miles until after dark and
made camp off the road.
