JESimpson,
1938.
20±ft, Punta Cirio, 5 mi. s. Puerto Libertad, Sonora.
April 27, 1938, continued.
Saw 4 or 5 whales spouting ¼t mi. off shore; we
saw them before at Puerto Lobos but not so close
to shore. While setting my mousetraps in the
sand dunes (among a bunch-grass(?) and occasional
tortote) the sunset on the bay silhouetting the steep
rock-sierias across the water — black and purple
peaks above silver water — where many schools of
sardines shimmered, the speckled sea-trout soon
broke water in the midst of a large school
50 yards off shore; then blowing and swimming
fast came a school of six porpoises — the sea-
trout no longer broke water. The porpoise patoled
a small area close to shore then for ten minutes?
while I watched them (also the sunset and whales). I
was quite certain that they (the porpoises) made
a series of muffled grunts while under and
at the surface of the water (not the blowing
noise of breathing); however, I could get no
confirmation of this from Señor Delgadillo
or Dr. Benson or subsequent observations when
light was good, and birds absent. We heard
the grunts many times (at first thought to
be sea-lions but none seen) when porpoises
patrolling along beach (deep water 30' off shore)
but could not be absolutely sure of the
origin of the sound. (Tried fishing after dark, but no luck.)
