permits grant the taking of 20 mammals, reptiles, and amphibians at each locality—no mention or permission to collect birds, however).
April 23, 1938
Caught 7 Perognathus penicillatus (5σ7/5 and 2♀5; no emb none saved), 2 Onychomys torridus (σ732; ♀233), and 19 Dipodomys merriami (10σ75 and 9♀5; 5σ75 put up: 234–238).
Cheek-pouch contents of pocketmice and kangaroo-rats saved.
The total catch of the party numbered 110 rodents in 150 mousetraps—very high compared to other places tried. The high population may be correlated with the heavier vegetation, especially notably is the ground cover of grass and scrub-grass. Much of the pouch contents was the grass-seed; so both cover and food [illegible] abundant.
Dr. Benson reported more deer this morning on trapline—5/1x, but too far for 22 shot.
Broke camp and drove 15.4 miles to Caborca, Sonora where we bought supplies, got a haircut and shave, and had an excellent dinner. Joined a party of 20–30 young Mexicans who serenaded a leading citizen & in celebration of his 50th birthday—he reciprocated by inviting all inside for a bottle of beer and dancing (we accepted both.) Returned to our old camp by the irrigation canal for sleep.
