over the sand (getting stuck a few times). We stopped for half an hour at Pozo Papolote (a federal project). Dr. Benson and SeƱor Delgadillo helped the well-keeper untangle the cable of the well-winche while I watched the "amateur" operator swing the 1/2-ton casing-bell bailer around with amazing speed and disregard for life and property. After he threatened, by his inability to control the contraption, (tower and winch with power from 4-cyl. gasoline engine) to tear down the tower, I gave him the rabbit's foot from my key-chain (he'd appreciate it), and we left getting stuck once over the remainder of the sand. Drove until after dark to camp at:

Set out 50 mouse-traps in the dark (half-moon giving good light) along banks of river in sand among mesquite and creosote.

Caught 2 Dipodomys deserti (no emb.) and 5 D. merriami (no emb.); the total of the party in these rats 4 D. deserti (no emb.) and 13 D. merriami (no emb.). No embryos; cheek pouch contents saved.
