B. Shaffer 1937 Journal Hotel "El Reposo" Dept. the [illegible] July small town near the pass in the rd. Paraiso, which we aimed for. We tried to catch a ride to no success, so walked back to the hotel & got someone who was going that way to take us up to Paraiso for 10$. We had requests as high as $40. The drive took 1 1/2 hours - definitely not a 2 wheel drive rd. We ate (1.25/2 people) then for $2 got another ride to the pass. Town is at 5800ft, so the last ~2-3 km was really steep to the pass. When you hit the crest, there are several paths off of the west side of the road. One goes down the other side - we followed it briefly but it goes [illegible]. The correct one is not quite from the top of the pass, and it goes up, then follows the rd. for ~20ft, then goes due West, straight up. We assumed this to be the proper trail & went up. We saw a lot of nice big, broad-leafed bromeliads. I hacked at one 10-15, no luck (*1). However, on the way back down, out of another 20, we got one C. rubbi. We kept climbing, turning stuff & tearing open logs, rocks, etc. - found absolutely nothing. Then at *2 we stopped to open more bromeliads & the 1st one came out a C. rubbi out of a large bromeliad. A few minuts later a large B. resplendens was fund
