Barillas, Huchuetenango
0 June
quite nice to walk thru. Unfortunately, we
found little workable habitat, & what we
wanted, we found nothing except a couple of
leptodactylids. We decided to head down (crest
was at 6500' el.) & found a big path thru
the scrubby stuff. Rolling rocks got 2
Bufo sp., one Rhadineu, one Thamnophis out
in the scrub. Then bade into the mature woods
where we got an Euneccs (breirosthis?) under
a big log, & another Barsia in the fire.
By this time it was pouring & we were
soaked, so we ran down. Of course, we hit the
road below the car, miscalculated, & went
down-walked all the way to town. Tomorrow
we'll get a bus up to the car. Dinner at 7,
then bed, I think.
Finca Chiblac, Dept. Huchuetenango
1-2 July
We rented our horses & hit the road to
Chiblac around 10:15 AM. It was a clear, hot
morning, & we got a good mula & a nice horse-
me on the mula, Paul con caballo. It's a long
ride- we stopped for lunch at Concepcion, where
the road forks to Chiblac, around 2. Off again by
2:20 & We found that the horses dislike going
down hill- they snake walk & go slowly, so we
walked down the grade to El Valle, & into Chiblac.
