B. Shaffer 1977 Journal Barillas, Dept. Huehuetenango. 7 June. El Valle. We decided we had gone to far and tried to back up the hill, without success. After a lot of different attempts we parked at the bottom, walked to Concepcion, I got a bus to Barillas. We then got us a young guy with his Toyota Land Cruiser truck to try to pull us out. The deal was $25 if we make it to Concepcion, nothing otherwise. With the help of 4 of his friends, we got it out - quite a relief. While we were trying to get out, around 1 PM, we found one dead and one live Micrurus elegans on the road. It's strange, but the snakes are rather common and diurnal. 8 June. Barillas, Dept. Huehuetenango. We went to the missionary, Bill Veith, and talked to him. This back yard is were B. mutlei have come from, so we asked if we could look for some. I got 5 of them, under rocks under cars. The best spots seems to be 1) under rocks in contact to other rocks, and 2) when the rock is under cover, like a bush. These were not big rocks, but often only a couple of pounds. Apparently the salamanders are out at night and are just ducking under.
