B. shiff 1476. Journal Cerro San Felipe, Est. Oaxaca, Mexico. 12 Feb. should be there, but got rare - since it was very warm, they may be out foraging. Also, most of the low bromiliads have been cut by the tornado, so they are fairly tough to work. This area, as most of the mtn, is pine + oak & is very dry. We moved on to a logging camp 4 km. W. of laumbre & worked more pine-oak slopes. Jim did well - several Thurius & about 5 P.smithi & the Thurius seem to be under bark often, while the smithii are under rocks or logs. Also, there seems to be the beginning of a correlation that the 2 are not often found together - perhaps smithii eats Thurius, or it's poison keeps it away. I also lopped some bromiliads here, but again, got nothing. we took off after a couple of hours & went to the next locality, a stream cut 9 km. W. of laumbre. The road goes west, & the stream runs N-S. across it. We again worked the same type of habitat, but got very little gain - a few odd Thurius inside of logs, & a few small smithii. This area was wetter, due to the stream, but was still a dry, steep slope, hard to work. I did notice that the wind had
