B. Shaffa 1976 Journal Cerro Pelon area, Est. Oaxaca, Mexico. 10 Feb. We drove on 4 km. to an area on the saddle of the mtn. top, & decided to work there a while. The area was again a dry, flat spot. We worked, but I got nothing. Jim however, did get, 3 thorios & one Barisia under rocks + logs. The area was not great, so we pushed on to the logging road east of Madrin (see map, 9 Feb.) This is yet another stand of oak-oak-pine - but primarily pine. Some of the area has been cut over, & many stumps were around. Further along the road to the east there is active logging - but got we worked a steep north-facing slope that was not badly cut over. Again by peeling back & chopping open logs we got thorius - also Jim tells me he got them just under logs, although I never found one under a log or rock. The area supports some scrappy pine-bromeliads, and Jim & I each got a thorius inside of one - they look like the normal guard ones, but we kept them separate anyway. In all we again got ~20 thorius, but no other herbs were seen. At this point we had a fairly good traverse up the dry, southern side of Cerro Pelon, but were missing anything from the
