B. Stuyffer 1972 Journal Mexico: Venezuela, Volcan San Martin. 5 Feb. Jim also picked up a small Anolis, but it died soon after. I also got 2 snakes - one small Geophis type thing under a wet log, and one that looks like the snakes from the coffee + Gurana fields of Fortin, also under a large, very rotten log. Jim got 1 other Thories under a large log. No more were seen. We walked nearly to the top, then decided to get back. We made it out of the forest to a fairly main trail by dark, but got somewhat lost in the tall & wandered around for several hours. The trip should definitely be a 2-3 day jaunt - it is beautiful as a lot to see, & camping would be very simple. Also, on the way in I grabbed an Anirena - out running around in the hot dry chaparral. All in all the area is highly worthwhile both for its herps & as an outstanding example of what tropical rainforest used to be like. Mexico - en route to Oaxaca. 6. Feb. We took off for Oaxaca, went north on Hwy. till we hit the river crossing (ferry). On Mex. Hwy. 145 toward Texcater we got a DOR Matrix sp. and saw a couple of others, really squashed.
