March 14 obviously is first-year on basis of plumage, had
a brown eye rather than the full red-brown eye
of adults. Apparently the iris may not reach the
adult condition until very late. This individual
was a female showing a somewhat enlarged
ovary - there was no brood patch but the sparseness
of feathers on the belly may have been a sign of
the development of a patch.
The type of cactus were present in the area - the
tuna, a fair sized cholla, and, rarely, a
candelabra type (see photos). Some bushes and
trees present but without leaves at this time of
year. Appears to be optimum cactus cover habitat
to judge from their abundance here.
