San Fernando, Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 8 Most of original vegetation around San Fernando has been removed for farming. A few patches of thick forest remain however. A mixture of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs.
San Fernando is located in a rather narrow valley which continues to the NNW. Noted several Calcutta formosa in the deciduous forest about 1000 feet below the town.
Ruben Dias said it is uncommon around San Fernando. Helfego Dias reported seeing the "virroca cabeza negra" this past week but this may or may not be true. I have a very difficult time understanding his Spanish.
Took a Titya about 1.5 mi SE of the town.
Oct. 9 - Buying food and preparing for trip to Santa Rita. Alvarez has loaned me a tent, Coleman lamp, specimen box, pots, and head lamp.
Oct. 10 - Up at 5:30. At 6:30 picked up supplies at the Museo and drove to San Fernando in a taxi with Bonifacio, arriving at 7:15. Met Helfego Dias. Packed part of the gear onto two horses and started up the valley to Santa Rita. Trip took about 1 1/2 hours.
