K.Selander, 1953 Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 3 Took taxi 3mi. ENE of Tuxtla where we hunted down toward the Rio [illegible] and brock, covering about 5 miles in cell. Vegetation is of a more arid character than at Zapotal. Large trees are rather uncommon & occur in small patches here and there. Extensive stands of the mezquite-like tree seen on south side of town yesterday. Along the Rio Salinial [illegible] the vegetation is similar to that at Zapotal - very large trees with many vines hanging from them. Rich herbaceous understory. The gorge of the Rio Salinial [illegible] is so steep that you can only get down to the water in a few spots. Saw the Monte "Frio" at the most NE point we went - could see the gorge of the Rio Chiapa (photo.) The other side (NE) of the Rio Salinial [illegible] gorge is steep, and densely wooded. Heard Caloutta all along the edge of the gorge and saw them down at the bottom,- apparently commoner there than on the SW side where I hunted and where there are fewer large trees. Thryothorus pleurostictus common all over the area we hunted, preferring spots similar to habitat of Troglodytes - ca. thickets at bases of large trees where there is a thick growth of bushes and herbs. Also occur in the mezquite-like tree mentioned above. One of commonest birds, along with [illegible] justulatus, Groove-billed Ani (common in flocks), greatcatcher,
