91 Vicinity of Tepic June 20 drove S of town to try to locate hamadryas calling areas - supposed to be 3 mi. SW, 3mi. W, and 6mi. SW Tepic, 3300 ft., There is a mt. SW of the town covered with dry pine forest & someone to hunt you must go S more than 6mi. to work into the wood. hamadryas may have actually taken a dirt road (if there is one) SW of town to get to this forest in 3 mi. - but I don't it. Rained hard just as I was going to head up the hill into the pines, so we returned to the hotel - went to a movie. Feeling a little better today but we both have colds & can't seem to get rested, despite a good sleep last night. June 21 Drove to a point 12mi. S Tepic, 3100 ft., where I hunted for in low oak stands for several hours. Calcutta was fairly common and I collected one. Calls very similar if not identical? with those of birds in Chiapas. Green jays present. Trogodyte sp. common & singing. Also a motmot and a large trogon present. No cootus were. hunted for several hours 7mi. W Tepic, walking up to top of dry pines on top of hill. No cootus were. Frost being cleared for agriculture. Then drove to Mazatlan, descending to coast thru a long winding barranca soon after leaving Tepic. Good wild tropical veg. extends for up this barranca. Stayed night in a motel.
