2 mi. W Zocafu, 7000 ft.
June 19 collected 14 specimens in an area of 1 sq. block.
This beg. is more or less continuous from north lake
to a point 20 mi. or so west of Zocafu when you
descend to lower, darent eventry. Oaks very
common & big in some areas ; others such as the place
where we collected seemed drier. Saw a nest in
a fine 40 fut or more up in a crotch ; another
possible nest in another tree. There is a red-wooded
type evergreen tree very common here, where were
in groups - adults & young. Can't be sure of make
up of all groups but took 7, 9 & ju. from flock
of 5 birds. The 9 seemed to be laying -- a second
hood ? I was first attracted to hoods by hearing
a call - long nasal - given by a female which
was in nest-pine tree. She flew down to a dead
bush (3 feet above ground) where I collected her.
Flight seems identical with jocosus > like jocosus
long flights are taken. Birds seem less wary than
jocosus but this beg. is more open & hard to get
hide. Young (ie. juveniles) ore especially tame &
easily approached. They seem to give same calls as
adults. Run along branches of pines and
other trees working at a variety of levels but
I think mostly low & they do go to the ground.
Keep up almost constant chatter - especially when
disturbed. Even after one or two birds of a group
have been shot the others will sometimes remain
