1 km. W Puerto Harnica
June 10 Today a Mexican boy brought us a young Pipilo which he
claimed to have found and get next. We are going to
attempt to raise it. The tail is stubby (1/2" or less long)
but the body feathers are well-grown. Its note is a
"chreep" - rather "hard on the ear" at close range. Once it
gave a shir-eh-tah-shit-clit - clatter (softly) as it
attempted to remove a piece of cotton from its head.
Sleeps with head turned back over its back. The same
boy brought a young - near fledged turdes - but
we decided against attempting to raise this bird. Hope
to be able to feed the Pipilo some seeds in addition to
insects we can capture, Mexican name: "Calieza prieta"
South North of the highway the mountain slants off to
a valley about 2 miles distant. There is a line of
mountain in the distance which appears forested,
June 11 There is a good bit of fog here - rolling in about noon
and followed by rain in the afternoon. Fog seems to
sit just the tops of the hills.
June 11 Plants: encino, cucharo (vinea-oak-like), capulin,
chancha - all except "square-leafed one or big tree.
I see no oaks, I was mistaken before. But there are many.

camp.)
Drive to Morelia and then to Jrapuato. Noted many
chats in desert vegetation near the "lake" we crossed
but no wrens.
