Puerto Garnica, Michoocan
June 8 Sibley mentions specimens of Pipilo from "Puerto
Garnica," 9,100 ft., Sierra de Ojumatlan, Michoocan.
The "Campos de Mexico" book gives the name as "Puerto
Garnica" and I judged the elevation to be 8500 ft.
and so wrote on tags today. We probably are higher
than 8500 ft.
At 5:45 A.M. I heard C. megalopterus call near the
tent. Hunted from 7 to 9 in a circle close around camp
(not more than 3/4 block in any direction). I collected 8
birds, shot but didn't recover 2 more and probably
2-3 more were present. This suggests a "colony" type
occurrence as in zonatus. The birds are in the highest
parts of tall pines or oaks so that it was necessary to
use 16 gauge - full-load shells to get most of them.
Generally they were in pairs and were seen chasing
each other thru the tops as does zonatus. Others
fed on pine branches high up. Calling stopped almost
gither at 9:00 and slacked off noticeably around 8:30.
I can see no real difference in flight between this
form a zonatus. They both have the appearance of a
small gain as they glide with tail fanned a bit.
The oaks-pines-firs here are very tall trees -
150 or more feet high. Epiphytic moss and lichens are
abundant & other types of epiphytic growth is present.
Around camp many trees have been logged but there
is still a heavy stand of vegetation. There is a good
understory of scrubby or small-tree vegetation.
