near Tzitzio. June 6 The most common vegetation on the steeper slopes is oak. Most of flat land & many of slopes have been grazed heavily or are being farmed & probably the entire area - with possible exception of some higher slopes away from the highway- has been disturbed in one way or another. Two types of oaks present - a thin one forming rather dense stands - but all of these ~~~~ sin leaves - dead ??? . The other sp. is a broad tree with huge leaves and usually occurs in scattered pairs & single trees dotting a hill. There is a heavy upward invasion of various degener-ious, thorny tree & turkees - mesquite probably - and other desert elements. Also a very few tune roots, some centum plants & we saw one dead-looking fan palm. These desert elements are very common - especially along the road, where the livestock grazing has occurred & I think it is a secondary thing, thee being present so commonly at such an altitude. Many photos - Bella 29-30 miles show typical habitat in this region . Probably the area is between Upper & lower Sonoran as regards life-zones. The desert elements reach their highest elevation here - alone is pine or pine-oak forest, drier than further east but still rather dense & rich.
