Sept. 29
Francisco at about 10:00 P.M. - left
call for 7:00 A.M.
Sept. 30
Arrived at the Industria Militar at 9:00 A.M.
After a short wait in the office of General Sanchez
Hamego I was able to get a permit from a
Colonel (didn't get the name) which authorized me
to take the gun and shells into the country. From
there I went to the Direccion de Aduanas at the
National Palace. While attempting to get in to see
Moreno Lopez, the Subdirector I was side-
tracked into the office of a Mr. Alchuga (spelling ?).
After 1/2 hours wait I was given an order
directing the Adwana office at the airport to
turn over the equipment to me. At the
Airport a Mr. Gustavo Pina, is a chief
of that office who speaks no English, said that
he could not turn over the things unless a man
from the Defensa Nacional was present to make
an inspection. Apparently no one was available
at the office at the time (2:00 P.M.) so after much
talking and many conferences, that part of the deal
was skipped. Instead the local customs men
inspected gun and shells. I was charged a
customs duty of 207.03 pesos despite my
insisting that the equipment was to be used for
scientific purposes and was to be returned to
the U.S. at the end of my stay in Mexico.
