Region of Ciudad Miguel Aleman, Veracruz
May 24 Miguel Aleman where I hunted in semi-pasture land in stands of short fan palm trees and sugarcane bushes.
Found lone zonatus in the palms which I collected. I saw no other turaco here. Cardinals, Arremonops were present. Sugar cane had been planted around the denser patches of palms & trees. The vegetation was generally drier than that further south as the break between the drier northern vegetation and the sugarcane vegetation of the basin of the Rio Papaloapan.
No evidence of nyfincuha although several spots seemed to me to be fair habitat. Took picture (Color Roll 27, 2) of area where I hunted. We then drove 15 mi. N Ciudad Aleman where I hunted for 20 minutes in a stand of short trees in semi-pasture land - similar to 13 mi. N but palms absent. Found no wrens. We then returned to Hotel Casino in Cosamaloapan for the night.
It looks as if our record 2 mi. N Tierra Blanca is at the southern limit for nyfincha. What the cause of this restriction is it is hard to tell. Certainly, if nyfincha had the wide ecological tolerance of humileis we would find it in several places south of Tierra Blanca. How it reaches Playa Vicente I cannot say, unless there is a tongue of drier vegetation reaching there from north along the mountains. In any event we have deter-mined that is does not occur around the Rio
