43a Region of Rio Papaloapan, Veracruz 1 May 23 I shut 3 yellow dots which may be corpora lutea) and a brood-patch which was not "jelly-lined" and which had some down growing on the bare area. It is possible that my 6 birds were really not all from one group - rather two groups located a short distance apart. I shot two birds from one sub-group near the trail - then moved in past the next tree where another sub-group was foraging & collected the other birds. Noted birds working along branches of trees & along palm frond "petiolas". The big nest in the large tree was over a foot long. About 10 feet from it in some tree was a smaller nest which was similar construction - rather coarse twigs - at least coarser than used in nests of Rufinucha. These nests were placed in tallest tree in the area - perhaps tallest in entire stand. Actually tall trees were rather widely spaced & rare in the stand. It seems almost certain that zonotias require, tall trees - in all situations where we have found the species this is the case. A good understory of vegetation seems equally necessary. - There is a decided vegetation change 10 miles before you reach Ciudad Aleman from La Tinaja. The country before the break is dry with low bushes or clumps of bushes & small trees - actually drier scrublier than at last camp. Then 10 mi. from the city - palms appear and there is a good cover of green grass, herbs on
