42 Region of Rio Papaloapan, Veracruz \May 23 Cannot work at a maintain a population. It is difficult to say what original vegetation in this area was. 95-98% is now in cultivation - mangoes, bananas & sugarcane. 3) Zonotus is competing and prevents infiniola from occurring here - this seems rather unlikely in view of fact that zonatus is rather uncommon here. I saw only 2 groups in this mile a more of veg. Roll 26 - photos 10-11-12 show photo of more dense, greener portions of habitat where I hunted today. Several birds seen: Uropsila leucogaster - song wo-dul-la, chu-da-la - given as a warble (soft) on about some pitch - shot confined to individual as one moved up to 12 feet in tree as I watched. When I shot at it and missed it flew to another tree about 10 feet distant and sang'. Noted one group of ant lances, collected one Arromorpho infinigatus, saw Turdus garji (1), Sialator coerulencus. Also Buteo hawk - probably hood-side hawk. Found 2 groups of zonatus. I came on two / possibly more?) birds (2307-8) in dense part of fan palm stand & collected them. Later I saw a nest high (30 foot) in a rather open, small-leaved tree, again in rather dense palm stand. At least 10 birds were in immediate vicinity. I shot one (not retrieved), wounded another, one got away, & I collected 6 others. Among latter 6 are two O-07 which seem to be at or near breeding condition - a ? with small ovary
