— Left San Francisco International Airport
on Western Airlines flight to Los Angeles
at 6:00 P.M. Baggage consisting of 2 suitcases,
a sleeping bag, a shotgun in case, and 34 pounds
of ammunition. Arrived in Los Angeles at
7:45. At 10:30 P.M., I left Los Angeles on
the Pan American (Mexicana de Aviacion) flight
#583 to Mexico City. Arrived at 7:00 A.M.,
Sept. 29.

At the office of the Aduana (Customs) at
the airport I was required to show my
Turista card and vaccination certificate
and give an address where I could be reached
in Mexico City. All my gear, with the exception
of the gun and case of ammunition, was only
hastily examined and given to me. Upon
showing my 1952 gun permit I was told
that it had expired (or at least was no
longer valid) and that a permit from the
"Military District #1" would be required.
At the Embajada Americana (Reforma and
Lafarga, Phone: 35 95 00) I contacted a
Mrs. Ortega, an American who is married
to a Mexican. She seemed smart and alert
and seemed very understanding when I
explained the problem. However, she re-
