March 11 Chihuahua to 4 mi. WSW Jimenez, Chil., Mexico.
Left the Santa Rita route at 8:00 and drone south-
east to a point 16 mi. SE Chihuahua, 4800ft.,
where I collected two Amphisiza hiliinata
from a small flock of 5 or 6. Wind was blowing
rather hard so I decided against further collect-
ing and we continued along the highway. At
Delicias the bolt holding the fan to the motor
block broke and we spent most of the afternoon
at the Ford garage having this repaired. The
charge was 54 pesos for labor and a new fan
belt. At 4:00 P.M. we again started south and
drone southeast thru Camargo. The area between
Chihuahua and Camargo is probably unsuited
for cactus wreene - just low scrubby bushes or
farm land. About 5 mi. SSE Camargo a few
fairly tall challas appear, along with some
thorny brush-trees. This habitat improves as
you go south -- we noted the first cactus wren
nest about 10 mi. SSE of Camargo. Between
10 and 4 2 mi. SSE we counted about 15 nests
placed either in challa or in thorny bushes. Most
of the nests were about 5 feet above the ground.
None of 6 examined appeared to be occupied at present
and we saw no birds. I found two nests placed
about 5 feet above ground in brush which grew was about
7 feet tall. There were no flowers or leaves on these
brushes -- they are not mesquite but the branches are
