R.K.Selander, 1954 México March 8 - March 8 Salt Lake City, Utah to Vermillion Cliffs, Arizona. Left Salt Lake City at 10:00 A.M. in the Ford panel truck with Bonnie; drove thru Kanab, Kane County and then on to the Vermillion Cliffs where we camp- ed just off the highway. March 9 Continued south on Arizona highway 89 to near Flagstaff, then east thru Holbrook to a point about 5 mi. S Socongo, New Mexico, and camped just off the highway. Wind blowing from north or northwest most of the day. March 10 Drone south to El Paso, arriving at 12:00. Bought 10 days Mexican car insurance, cotton for Chester Lamb, and several other items of equipment and then crossed border into Mexico at about 3:30 P.M. The Mexican Aduanal Office is now located in a new building on the right side of the road just beyond the bridge. No trouble in getting our gear thru customs. An American officer asked if we were carrying any guns but the Mexicans asked only where we were going. After crossing the border we drone on south to the Santa Rita Courts just north of Chihuahua (35 pesos for a double bed with shower). Between Tindad Juarez and Chihuahua we encountered two checking stations as shown on the AAA maps in the handbook, Strong westerly winds blowing all along the road to Chihuahua, especially bad in the region just south of Juarez.
