3-6 mi. S Tonala', 180ft., Chie., Mexico
Oct. 26 Ceiba, Mango, Guanacaste, Primavera,
Mora, Totoposte - all of these by my guide?
Will get specimens for identification by Miranda.
The vegetation is mixed deciduous - evergreen with
more of the former. Many good-looking milk cows
grazing in fields - apparently big business here.
Noted no real change in vegetation as compared
to Tonala' outskirts except fenceless thickets --
trees perhaps larger but perhaps not. Will take
some more looking. In any event the trees are much
larger than those found in the forest on the foothills
to the north of Tonala'. Miranda calls the foothill
region his "Selvas Bajas Deciduas" while the
Tonala' vicinity is "Sabanas y selvas altas
sub-deciduas" According to Miranda's map
there is a zone of "selvas bajas deciduas"
along the coast south of Tonala' and then zones
of Palmares and Manglares. Also Miranda shows
the "Selvas Altas Siempre Verdes" on the hills
to the north-west of Tonala'. Must investigate this
forest. H.chiapensis should be there.
Still no sign of herindis!
Native boy brought me 3 specimens he took about
1/2 miles NW of the Hotel Gonzalez - in the town - apparently
with a flipper. Paid him 4 pesos for each.
