R.K.Selander, 1953 Heliodytes nigricaudatus La Polka, Chiapas, México Oct. 28 Specimen: 1687 = Specimen 1688 = less on fist than # 1687 Found one flock of 4 birds in a patch of bushes and low deciduous trees near the railroad track and bordering a milpa. First noticed the wrens working on the outer branches and twigs of the bushes - silently. Shot one of two seen and then the other. The third flew into a stand of small deciduous trees and I couldn't locate it. Shot a third bird near the first two but couldn't find it in the thick, tall grass. About 30 yards away in a similar situation found 2 more birds. Shot one which was perched about 2-1/2 feet above the ground in a dense brush but apparently didn't kill it. - all birds were silent. At dusk we heard no singing of wrens, and I can only conclude that the birds are 1) either uncommon in the area (this contrary info. from natives) or 2) are not singing at this season.
