C. zonatus
Santa Rita, Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 10 flights of 30-40 yards. Flight is rapid &
direct - often glide before alighting. When
feeding they keep up a constant chatter of semi-
loud, simple notes. When disturbed their calls
become louder x harsher. - Will get full notes
on calls in next few days. Did not collect
specimens since I want to study the flock.
Birds don't seem particularly inconspicuous in
the trees & other vegetation - ie. their marking
& coloration does not conceal them especially
well, Juveniles less wary than adults, but
neither flee too readily when approached. Instead
they become very noisy - when approached
too closely then make a long flight to another
tree. The flock seemed located in one part-
icular spot as I found them it there on two
occasions - 1 1/2 hour between.
Oct. 11 Located some flock as yesterday about 75 yards
from spot where they were first found. Very wary.
Photographed a nest which Sr. Helpego claims
is that of C. zonatus. Local name is 'cargoché'
Oct. 12 Fairly common over whole area. Occurs in
flocks which are more or less widely scattered.
Call when excited is "Karr, Karr, Karr" -
foraging notes less harsh and without rolled
'r' When excited several birds produce a confusing clowr -
each one calling "chet-chet-chet = chet-chet-chet"
