K. Selauder, 1953 Xanthura yncas Tuxtla Gutierrez, 1732ft., Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 2 This jay said by Alvarez to be numerous in the "forests" to the south of north of Tuxtla, especially to the south 4km. at Zapotal. Oct. 4 Alvarez said this species occur only in the forests to the south of Tuxtla - at Zapotal, not in the fields or scrubs around Tuxtla. Oct. 6 Alvarez reported 4 around the Museo this afternoon. He says they usually are tame and that he always shoots them with .22 shot. They are more common at Villa Alvarado than around Tuxtla, he said. near Sumidero Gorge, 4800ft., 10mi. N Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 7 Found several small flocks in rain forest along road. They are less shy than Calocitta and will often fly in to imitations of their calls. This common call is "chee-oo-cheo, cheo" sounding a bit like that of Centurus aurifrons. They frequent the thicker portions of the closed forest in places where, because of dense understory, it is almost impossible to find them once they are shot and fall. Took a juvenile which is molting heavily on the head. Iris is a dull grayish-brown. Noted no Calocitta in the rain forest - its range is lower down - in the deciduous forest at low elevations around Tuxtla.
