Calvitta formosa
Tonalá, 180 ft., Chiapas, México
Oct. 23 Noted numerous of [illegible] birds this species in
trees from Arriaga to Tonalá in about same
habitat situation as at Teutila, but trees
longer and much more grassy area.
Near Tonalá we ran onto a flock of 6 or 7,
I got 2 with one shot, then another as it
perched above the other two and "cawed"
excitedly. Got one more as if flew toward a
large tree about 75 yards from the patch of
trees where I first found the flock. I only wounded
it so we picked it up an tried to get some noise
out of it - but it only "cawed" rather softly -
(Have color shot of Bonifacio with this jay in
the field of grass - The large trees will be shown
in the background). Meanwhile, another bird
from the same flock perched in a tree about
75 yards away and "cawed" loudly - a
simple harsh 'caw - caw'. Specimens taken
were two adult females (one slightly doubtful
whether adult - but probably so) and 2 juvenile
males - Again a flock with more than one adult
female, - With two or more shotguns it would
be a fairly simple matter to collect one entire
flock.
Oct. 25 - Heard two or more jays giving the 'jurr' - 'jurr'
note - rather softly. These birds were not hiding, unaware
of my presence while giving this note. In any event the
