Calocitta
2 mi. NE Tuxtla Gutierrez, 1800ft, Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 17 Near the Rio Sabinal I ran into a flock of 4 Guirds.
Shot one and the others starting "cawing" excitedly
and stayed in the large tree so I was able to get 2
more the other one stayed around a short while
but I was unable to get a shot at it. Composition
of this flock was surprising - 2 of the three Guirds
taken were adult females, the other was a juvenile.
There is some slight possibility that I mixed the
specimens up - I took one bird later - but
I doubt it. In any case my field nos. 1617 (f.ad)
and 1619 (ov ju.) were two of the Guirds taken from
this flock of 4 - I am positive of this because I
just dried leaves in their throats at the time
I shot them.
Tays are in better plumage than earlier in the
month. Outer primaries & crest feathers of adults
are still ensheathed, however.
Calocitta especially common in the farming
area along the Rio Sabinal.
The other specimen taken today was shot from
a flock of 3 or 4 in a spot just about 30 yards
from the river - from a medium-sized tree in
a orange-tree grove. - But bird was not in an orange
tree.
