Calocitta
Santa Rita, 3000 ft., Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 10 Hunted 2 1/2 hours around camp in late after-
noon. No jays present.
Oct. 11 about 4 P.M. encountered a flock of 5-10
Calocitta in thick forest below camp. The birds
were excited and called loudly - a ringing
"Cheer, Cheer." Unable to get a shot as birds
were moving rapidly through the trees. Didn't hear
the "turr, turr" call. Not close enough to tell
if any were block-headed. As I recall from my
experience in Vera Cruz with Ptilorhinae, the
call of that bird is a little like the one heard today?
Oct. 12 at 8:00 A.M. a flock of jays were calling
from edge of forest below camp - same call
as yesterday - a loud, ringing "Cheer or
"Zcheer - zcheer" - descending in pitch.
"Cheer" or "Pheew." I made an amazingly
long shot with 6 shot, killing one
jay - which is typical of C. formosa. Other
birds scattered after I fired. - No jays
heard all day long while hunting at Santa
Cruz, 5 miles to west of camp. At about
4:30 P.M. heard several jays calling - in
various directions. Same ringing call.
On the way to camp from Santa Cruz at
about 6 P.M. we found a bend in
the trail and surprised a Calocitta which was
