K.Slander, 1953 8 Calocitta Santa Rita, 3000 ft., Chiapas, Mexico Oct. 10 Hunted 2 1/2 hours around camp in late after- noon. No jays present. Oct. 11 about 4 P.M. encountered a flock of 5-10 Calocitta in thick forest below camp. The birds were excited and called loudly - a ringing "Cheer, Cheer." Unable to get a shot as birds were moving rapidly through the trees. Didn't hear the "turr, turr" call. Not close enough to tell if any were block-headed. As I recall from my experience in Vera Cruz with Ptilorhinae, the call of that bird is a little like the one heard today? Oct. 12 at 8:00 A.M. a flock of jays were calling from edge of forest below camp - same call as yesterday - a loud, ringing "Cheer or "Zcheer - zcheer" - descending in pitch. "Cheer" or "Pheew." I made an amazingly long shot with 6 shot, killing one jay - which is typical of C. formosa. Other birds scattered after I fired. - No jays heard all day long while hunting at Santa Cruz, 5 miles to west of camp. At about 4:30 P.M. heard several jays calling - in various directions. Same ringing call. On the way to camp from Santa Cruz at about 6 P.M. we found a bend in the trail and surprised a Calocitta which was
