R.K. Selander, 1953 4 Calouitta formosa Oct. 2-3 Zapotal p850ft., c.a. Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas. 3mi. ENE On Oct. 3 took 5 specimens at Zapotal and saw many other individuals. They occur in pairs or in groups of 4-5 (family groups?). Seem to be generally distributed over the area from the edge of town up the hill - but apparently less common in the wetter, thicker portions of the forest. They are rather wary and will not come well to imitations of the calls or to owl-calls. The most frequently heard call is a throaty low -- "zurrr, zurrr, zurr" -- sounding just about like the first part of their Mexican name -- "urraea "(with a definite rolling sound to the "r"). Their flight is slow and rather laboured, not unlike that of Psilorhinaes (which I saw in Vera Cruz) but less loose. When one of a flock is shot the others scatter and are silent. Most frequently seen perched in tops of larger trees -- never near the ground. On Oct. 4 - I took 3 specimens near the Rio Salinal, 3mi. ENE Tuxtla at about 1800ft. Similar situations as at Zapotal are frequented by Calouitta. Especially common near the gorge of the Rio, less so on the drier slopes where the mesquite - like tree is dominant. Have color photo of tree in which I collected one specimen.
