Caloitta formosa
Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, Mexico
Oct. 2 some bananas in the "next day or so", so Alvarez will question him about our going up there to hunt. He is said to be "an honest man" and a good guide.
There are no hotels and Villa Allende so we will have to sleep in a hut on one of the "ranches", only native food available. Horses avail able for rent. Can reach Villa Allende by bus from Tuxtla (twice daily). From there it is 1 hour's horseback ride to Santa Rita - a ranch where Alvarez shot the specimen of the black-headed jay. Said to be very hilly near Villa Allende with heavy growth of trees - much better than at Tuxtla. - Alvarez said he was also "surprised" to find Psilorhinae at Villa Allende "because it is so high."
Alvarez has single sets of eggs of Caloitta, Xanthoura, and Psilorhinae in his home collection.
Caloitta and Psilorhineae have light brown eggs which are spotted with darker brown - are rather similar in appearance. (will get color photo).
Oct. 4 Alvarez has black-white photos of nests & eggs of Xanthoura and Caloitta - am having enlarged copies made.
